Born February 28, 1831, in St. Marks, Wakula County, Fla. Practiced law in Washington, D.C., after passing the bar in 1854; also farmed in Warren County, N.C. He married Esther Ellery of Boston in 1858. Joined the Confederate Army, commissioned as a lieutenant colonel in the 2nd North Carolina Battalion, serving on General Daniel's staff until wounded and captured at Gettysburg; was a prisoner on Johnson's Island in Lake Erie. After the war, he took up viticulture at Tokay Vineyards near Fayette...
